I am curious and have some thoughts that I am hopeful will not be viewed as=

=A0
Could this idea, "... there is also a distinction between how I treat an in=
dividual who stands before me and what laws best serve a society." be the f=
irst step toward discrimination? Seems to me that how we treat the individu=
al IS what best serves society.=20
As for immigrants and our economy, etc., etc.,; it seems unjust that busine=
sses and capital are unconstrained in terms of political borders, but peopl=
e are.=A0How come my investment and business can move easily, but my starvi=
ng family cannot?
As for "what Mexico does in terms of immigration verses the US," and that s=
ome how (if I understand the comment correctly) we should follow suit, remi=
nds me of a George Carlin comment about kids daring each other. "If Johnny =
Finnegan jumped off the Empire State building does that mean you should?" S=
o, I am not sure that what one country does, or does not do, gives or denie=
s credence to what another country does. Were that the case, what bar would=
we set; Burma?
As for being the descendant of immigrants; we all are. Bea, is an immigrant=
and I sense some pain in that transition from Germany to here. I could be =
wrong. She seems to be writing from experience, not speculation.
As for the job loss question; maybe another place to look would be the (now=
global) wage disparity. It seems to me, that when so much is concentrated =
into the hands of so few, someone is going to go hungry. Were it, that as m=
uch energy that is put into stopping poor people from finding a way to feed=
there loved ones would be put into dealing with the financial products suc=

I don't recall the admonishment in Matthew 25 to only include those within =
our borders. And while I am not sure where the solution is, but I can't ima=

Here's another thought on this.=A0 And I offer it only because I resist any=
efforts to make any political opinion simple.
We are to see Christ in the neighbor who is the illegal immigrant.=A0 But w=
e are also to see Christ in the neighbor whose life is affected by illegal =
immigration,.=A0 So I have an obligation to consider what happens to a soci=
ety where there is open violation of the law.=A0 I have an obligation to co=
nsider the consequences to those who are taxed to provide the cost of socia=
l services, medical care, law enforcement, etc.=A0 And I have an obligation=
to consider what happens to the social fabric when people are vulnerable t=
o abuse because they are illegal.=A0=20
I will not defend the Arizona law.=A0 It looks like political theater not a=
n attempt to create a more just and civil society.=A0 And to me, that's the=
tragedy of our current situation.=A0 We seem more interested in how we loo=
k than in what is just for my neighbor.
PS there is also a distinction between how I treat an individual who stands=
before me and what laws best serve a society.

I strongly disagree with your interpetation of Arizona's immigration law.=

Fellow Clergy! =A0Please PASS THIS EMAIL TO OTHER CLERGY, my email list inc=
omplete.
As you know, this year's May march will take on a very powerful tone due to=
three factors: the most prominent is what happened in Arizona last week: t=
he introduction of Arizona's SB 1070, the law that will legitimize the prac=
tice of unreasonable search and seizure, unwarranted detention of American =
citizens and racial profiling. =A0 The second factor: the introduction of a=
conceptual framework on comprehensive immigration reform in the Senate. =
=A0The third: the powerful effect that faith communities have had in mobili=
zing the immigrant community.
As clergy, we are morally outraged at the unjust and inhumane treatment of =
immigrants in Arizona. =A0History calls us to respond in with powerful, fai=
thful witness. Silence from people of good will and the lack of public outr=
age from grass roots faith leaders has given those who hate immigrants a pl=
atform for their divisive rhetoric. =A0Anti-immigrant personalities flood t=
he news shows on conservative-leaning media with false data on immigrants. =
Commentaries from television personalities such as Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity=
and JD Hayworth have solidified a base of angry anti-immigrant activists. =
=A0Hate incidents and hate crimes against immigrants is on the rise in near=
ly all 50 states, including here in Santa Clara County.
I am imploring that you participate in the May 1 march and rally. =A0We wil=
l have a powerful prayer ritual in the beginning of the march. Clergy from =
all denominations are asked to make your way to the foot of the stage at 3:=
30 pm and help bless and distribute sweet bread to the crowd. =A0The bread =
will signify the unity we share with one another, especially between immigr=
ant and non-immigrant. =A0Please wear some kind of clerical garb or religio=
us symbol that will signify your role within your faith tradition.
I ask that you please join the march and stand with the thousands of people=
who are praying for the unity of their loved ones. Having a strong, visibl=
e clergy presence has helped maintain the spiritual and peaceful atmosphere=
among participants. The march will end with a rally at the City Hall at =
=A06 pm.
I'm enclosing the Justice for Immigrants Diocese of San Jose Pastoral Lette=
r on Arizona's SB 1070 below. =A0Please feel free to distribute.

ect: May 1 Action

Fellow Clergy! Please PASS THIS EMAIL TO OTH=
ER CLERGY, my email list incomplete.

As you know, this year's May ma=
rch will take on a very powerful tone due to three factors: the most promin=
ent is what happened in Arizona last week: the introduction of Arizona's SB=
1070, the law that will legitimize the practice of unreasonable search and=
seizure, unwarranted detention of American citizens and racial profiling. =
The second factor: the introduction of a conceptual framework on com=
prehensive
immigration reform in the Senate. The third: the powerful effect tha=
t faith communities have had in mobilizing the immigrant community.

=
As clergy, we are morally outraged at the unjust and inhumane treatment of =
immigrants in Arizona. History calls us to respond in with powerful, =
faithful witness. Silence from people of good will and the lack of public o=
utrage from grass roots faith leaders has given those who hate immigrants a=
platform for their divisive rhetoric. Anti-immigrant personalities f=
lood the news shows on conservative-leaning media with false data on immigr=
ants. Commentaries from television personalities such as Glenn Beck, Sean H=
annity and JD Hayworth have solidified a base of angry anti-immigrant activ=
ists. Hate incidents and hate crimes against immigrants is on the ris=
e in nearly all 50 states, including here in Santa Clara County.

I a=
m imploring that you participate in the May 1 march and rally.
We will have a powerful prayer ritual in the beginning of the march.=
Clergy from all denominations are asked to make your way to the foot of th=
e stage at 3:30 pm and help bless and distribute sweet bread to the crowd. =
The bread will signify the unity we share with one another, especiall=
y between immigrant and non-immigrant. Please wear some kind of cleri=
cal garb or religious symbol that will signify your role within your faith =
tradition.

I ask that you please join the march and stand with the t=
housands of people who are praying for the unity of their loved ones. Havin=
g a strong, visible clergy presence has helped maintain the spiritual and p=
eaceful atmosphere among participants. The march will end with a rally at t=
he City Hall at 6 pm.

I'm enclosing the Justice for Immigrants=
Diocese of San Jose Pastoral Letter on Arizona's SB 1070 below. Plea=
se feel free to distribute.
