Dear Ed,
I agree with you. in theory. But in practice my heart is in a different
place. To leave one's homeland is not something one would do easily or
lightly even under the best of circumstances. It is so hard to be away from
family! And to leave with uncertainty, not knowing whether one will survive
the trip, whether one will be robbed, beaten or shot, or placed in
interminable detention upon arrival. All these are scary prospects. It
speaks of the utter desperation of the people who try to cross the border
knowing all that awaits them, and still they attempt the journey. When they
arrive here, can we look them in the face and see the face of Christ? And
then decide what is the best way forward and treat them as we would Christ?
What a vast majority thinks in these matters is informative and should
certainly be brought into consideration, but ultimately I hope that I listen
to the gospel more than to public opinion. I would be willing to go to jail
for this.

I strongly disagree with your interpetation of Arizona's immigration law.
If you carefully read the new law, all it does is inforce U.S. federal
immigration law. Also, Mexico, as a nation, has such a law and enforces it.
As a long time member of Federation for American Immigration Reform and
Californians for Population Stabilization, I know this is a correct
interpretation of Arizona's law. Without laws and the enforcement of them,
we become a society filled with chaos. Our immigration laws are the most
liberal in the world, allowing more than one million legal immigrants to
enter the U.S. every year. At a time when anywhere from l0% to 15% of
Americans are out of work and the nation is in economic crisis, we muct
enforce our immigration laws. Arizona is doing what our federal authorities
have not been willing to do- enforce the laws of our land. By the way, a
vast majority of Americans wholeheartedly support this enforcement of our
laws.
Pastor Ed Miller
P.S.: By the way, I am the son of legal immigrants. Also, of my five grown
children, three of them are married to immigrants, from Mexico, China and
Cambodia. My twelve grandchildren are a beautiful rainbow of colors. In
other words, Americans who support law enforcement, should never
automatically be called racists. I strongly resent that... I , for one,
was involved in the civil rights movement of the 60's. Again, all we want
to do is regain enforcement of the laws of our land, To me that is the
moral high ground.

Fellow Clergy! Please PASS THIS EMAIL TO OTHER CLERGY, my email list
incomplete.
As you know, this year's May march will take on a very powerful tone due to
three factors: the most prominent is what happened in Arizona last week: the
introduction of Arizona's SB 1070, the law that will legitimize the practice
of unreasonable search and seizure, unwarranted detention of American
citizens and racial profiling. The second factor: the introduction of a
conceptual framework on comprehensive immigration reform in the Senate. The
third: the powerful effect that faith communities have had in mobilizing the
immigrant community.
As clergy, we are morally outraged at the unjust and inhumane treatment of
immigrants in Arizona. History calls us to respond in with powerful,
faithful witness. Silence from people of good will and the lack of public
outrage from grass roots faith leaders has given those who hate immigrants a
platform for their divisive rhetoric. Anti-immigrant personalities flood
the news shows on conservative-leaning media with false data on immigrants.
Commentaries from television personalities such as Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity
and JD Hayworth have solidified a base of angry anti-immigrant activists.
Hate incidents and hate crimes against immigrants is on the rise in nearly
all 50 states, including here in Santa Clara County.
I am imploring that you participate in the May 1 march and rally. We will
have a powerful prayer ritual in the beginning of the march. Clergy from all
denominations are asked to make your way to the foot of the stage at 3:30 pm
and help bless and distribute sweet bread to the crowd. The bread will
signify the unity we share with one another, especially between immigrant
and non-immigrant. Please wear some kind of clerical garb or religious
symbol that will signify your role within your faith tradition.
I ask that you please join the march and stand with the thousands of people
who are praying for the unity of their loved ones. Having a strong, visible
clergy presence has helped maintain the spiritual and peaceful atmosphere
among participants. The march will end with a rally at the City Hall at 6
pm.
I'm enclosing the Justice for Immigrants Diocese of San Jose Pastoral Letter
on Arizona's SB 1070 below. Please feel free to distribute.
