Bible Reading: Romans 3:19-22
"Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the
law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held
accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight
by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.
But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to
which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes
through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe."
This month we celebrate the 491st Anniversary of the beginning of the
Protestant Reformation. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed his 95
theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. In so doing,
he began a protest that reformed the church.
As Lutheran Christians, we have a great heritage. Martin Luther and the
other reformers gave to us a model to follow in our lives, as we stand in
protest against anything that diminishes Christ. They also gave to us a
clear understanding of how it is we are made right with God. And thus, our
heritage (through the reformers) points us to Jesus.
We live in a world that is hesitant to talk about sin, let alone to face
what it does in our lives. Common thought today is that we simply need to do
our best, work hard at being good people, and try not to hurt others along
the way. If we do that much, (so the thinking goes), then we will end up in
heaven.
Unfortunately for us, it's not that simple. Sin is far too serious for us to
"work it away" through even our best efforts. Sin separates us from God. Sin
requires a price to be paid. Sin makes it impossible for us to become right
with God on our own. Fortunately for us, God has provided a way in Jesus. On
the cross, Jesus breaks down the separation that exists. On the cross, Jesus
paid the price that needed to be paid. And on the cross, Jesus makes us
right with God, as we place our trust in Him.
As we celebrate our heritage this month, let us never forget who we are. We
are Christians. We are followers of Jesus. We are loved and forgiven and
redeemed children of God. And all because of Christ.all because of the cross
of Jesus.
****************************************************************************
**
Let us pray.
Lord Jesus, I thank you for all you have done for me: for the
price you paid, the penalty you bore, and the sin you carried to the cross.
I deserved to die, but you died in my place. I deserved to be separated from
God, but you brought me back together with Him.
I thank you also, for the heritage I have as a Lutheran
Christian: for Martin Luther and for the many other reformers of his day.
Help me to never take for granted what now belongs to me in Jesus. Help me
to live this day for Him. Help me to give this day to Him. And help me to
place this day, (if not my entire life) in His hands. In Jesus' name I pray.
Amen.
