Thank you for this very timely, e-mail, Dawn!
As to reinventing 9/11 as a day of understanding and reconciliation .
Germans write their dates by putting down Day/Month/Year. So for Germans
9/11 means the Ninth of November. It so happens that this is a very special
day in Germany history, because on our "9/11" - November 9, 1989 - the
Berlin Wall came down.

as the day, for darkness is as light to you." Ps. 139:11-12
Today, I received this email from a parishioner in preparation for the
anniversary of 9/11. It connects with my own reflections on what makes us
who we are? How do the events of our lives individually and collectively
shape us? Are there choices to make as we reflect upon any given event from
our past in how it influences our words and our actions today? How has God
touched you in suffering? How does God touch us? Here's how one person
responds 7 years later. What is God asking of you today, ...tomorrow,
...the days to come?

(PS. As I see the phrase 'flowers in the cracks' I think of a country song
out now called "I Saw God Today" by George Strait. A simple song that on
the surface may seem a bit fluffy... yet it's my understanding he is not a
man ignorant to pain. He and his wife lost their only daughter to a tragic
car accident at age 13 before he ever wrote this song. May you enjoy the
precious gifts given to you this day.)

On 9/11, I would like us all, as interested and concerned citizens of the
world, to photograph and record the world as it is now.

Celebrate the renewal of life.
Celebrate a new spirit of the day.
Cherish the moments and images.
Pray at 11:11 am and 11:11 pm.
Listen to the wind and the world around you.
Record your thoughts and feelings in words and images.
Consider how this day is different than the one seven years before.
Reinvent 9/11 as a day when the Flowers in the Cracks can be found.
Reinvent 9/11 as a day when we can engender Global Understanding.
