Pressing On

Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made
perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took
hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of
it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what
is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has
called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:12-14

Stops and starts. In traffic the other day, that was all we
did. Stop. Start. Go forward a few feet and stop. All the while, however,
we kept on moving forward, pressing on towards our goals, our various
destinations.

Our life in Christ also moves forward, but not without its stops
and starts. Like Paul, none of us is perfect. Daily we need to stop, to
confess our faults and failures; to be forgiven and move forward again.
Daily we also need to stop and forgive the next person, letting go of
grudges and complaints. "Press on!" Paul says. Keep your goal in front of
you, and keep moving towards it.

We aren't perfect, nor have we yet grasped the promises that God
holds for us in Christ. But the good news is that God has grasped ahold of
us! We have been grasped by the Good News of forgiveness in Christ, so that
our lives can move ever forward to the goal God has for us, here in this
life, and to a far greater goal in the next.

Let us pray.

Lord Jesus, you have provided for me a way forward through
confession and forgiveness; you have provided for me a life in which to live
out your promises. You have also provided me your Spirit, who reminds me to
stop and pray, who prods me into your Word that I may live by it. As I move
through the stops and starts of my life, help me to keep my eyes on you,
leaving behind those things that would hinder me and cause me to falter.
Keep me moving forward, Lord; help me to keep my eyes fixed on your
promises, lending a helping hand to other travelers on the way. Amen.
