Devotional based on the Hymn: "Faith of Our Fathers"

"Faith of our fathers! living still

In spite of dungeon, fire, and sword;

O how our hearts beat high with joy

Whene'er we hear that glorious word."

This hymn, written by Frederick Faber in the 19th century, obviously has to
do with Christians suffering persecution -- and the inspiration that their
heroic witness gave to their fellow Christians. Indeed, we are always
inspired by stories of Christians who maintain their faith in the face of
persecution or death.

Persecution has been a part of the church's life from the very beginning,
and is still part of its life today. We all know about the Roman
persecution of Christians in the first century, but might not realize how
pervasive persecution of Christians is in various countries around the world
today -- in China , Vietnam , Indonesia , Iran , and many other countries.

We need to pray for Christians who endure persecution today -- to make
ourselves aware of their stories -- and to be inspired by their heroic
witness. We have a great heritage, in part, because of the persecution of
those who have suffered on behalf of Christ. Let me encourage you to pray
for persecuted Christians today. Your prayers for them, as for all people,
do not go unheard.

************************************************************************

Let us pray.

Heavenly Father, there are many faithful believers who have been
called to suffer for their faith - some in years gone by, and others still
in our world today. Today we thank you for them (for their witness, for
their faithfulness, and for the example they have give to us).

We pray for those who are being persecuted in other parts of the
world. Wherever they are, whatever their situation and circumstances might
be, we pray that you would give them peace and assurance and comfort in
their suffering. We pray, also, for an end to all suffering, especially
among those who are suffering in your name. Grant hope and promise and
freedom to them in this life, as well as the hope and promise and freedom we
have eternally in Christ. Amen.
