Greetings Friends in Christ,

I pray your summer has been enriching and that you have had some =20
opportunity for down time. I begin my vacation today but wanted to =20
share with you a devotion I read from An Almanac for the Soul--=20
Anthology of Hope by Marv and Nancy Hiles, Iona Center, The Daybook =20
Papers,II (pp160-161)
May YOU have chance to sit in a garden for an hour or watch the =20
Persid Meteors move thru the skies this August as summer comes to a =20
close. Sincerely Dawn

August 8-16
"During intense August days, summer slows to a standstill, and we =20
find it better simply to accept what lies before us than go in search =20
of an opening somewhere else. Jesus taught that 'The gate that leads =20
to life is small and few there be who find it.' Our small gates are =20
often close by our chairs. Will summer pass without our having =20
spent, at least, one hour sitting still in a garden? At night when =20
you look 'out' our 'up' into the night sky, remember that you are =20
really looking down into the universe! The truth is, the universe =20
has neither up or down. The stars, so accessible on a warm August =20
night, are symbols of our deepest yearning for 'home' in the =20
universe. The constellation Sagittarius, 'The Teapot,' though low on =20
the southern horizon points directly to the center of our galaxy. =20
The Persid Meteors pass by us and we witness them coming and going in =20
the dark, so distant, so fleeting, yet part of The One Thing. =20
Somewhere directly overhead in a triangle of stars is brilliant Vega, =20
fifty times brighter than our own sun, a dazzling beacon, twenty-=20
seven light years away. Closer to home, Li-Young Lee suggests that =20
thoughts of mortality can be swept away in the taste of a ripe =20
peach. There are many ways to look into the heart of things, from =20
the distant furnaces of the sky, the lapping water against a canoe, =20
or by following a dust mote as it drifts through a shaft of light in =20
the house.

The meditative-breath focus for the next two weeks is from Ps 51:12 =20
(Moffatt) 'Give me a willing spirit as my strength.' Use a willing/ =20
spirit. "
