A New Mindset

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things
above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on
things above, not on earthly things. (Colossians 3:1-2)

After my first year of college, I had the privilege of working
at Mt. Hermon, in our own Santa Cruz mountains. I was a counselor at
Ponderosa (the Senior High camp) for the whole summer - a rich time in my
life, in many ways. The kids were excited about camp; the staff had a whole
lot of energy (even me); and the speakers were electrifying.

I heard many speakers that summer, but I remember one in
particular. He told the kids, "Your mind is a big storage unit. Everything
that goes in there, stays there. And all those images and songs and
memories will come back to you at various times - bidden and unbidden."

He paused. "So what do you want to keep in that storage unit?
A lot of junk that is going to keep coming back to haunt you, to make you
stumble, to trip you up? Or do you want to store valuable things, good
stuff, which will continue to enrich your life and give you joy?" He paused
again, to let us think through the stuff in our storage unit. The stillness
in the room indicated that he had our full attention. Then, very gently, he
continued. "God has so much treasure to give you. Valuable stuff.
Sparkling wisdom and rock-solid truth. Fill your minds with these things.
Set your minds on things above - where Christ is."

Let us pray.

Lord Jesus, you have shown us what is good. You have given us
the best you have to offer - and at great personal cost. Help me to store
it all up in my mind and in my heart through studying your Word, singing
songs of praise, being present in worship. Steer me away, Lord, from
accumulation of stuff - especially that stuff that is harmful. Help me to
value the great gift you have given me of a curious mind, a good education,
training in wisdom. Give me a new mindset, Lord, a mind set on You. Amen.
