Two items:
1st) I'm interested in being included in the joint Lenten preaching
discussion.
2nd) I don't know the Parish First Tuesday event will be on the 5th or the
12th, but regardless I'd like to pass on the following flier to the pastors
of the SCVLP. I do so recalling the last Hein-Fry lecture with Rev. Dr.
Craig Nessan, who called us to biblical interpretation & preaching that
takes two tracks "God's Justice" & "the Good News of Christ."
The two presenters Fr. Eduardo Samaniego, S.J., Most Holy Trinity Catholic
Church and Rabbi Dana Magat, Temple Emmanuel are first rate.
Earlier this year Fr. Eddie brought to his parish the so called Black Pope,
or the new head of the Jesuit Order Fr. Adolfo Nicolas. While the Jesuits
have been controversial much of it is due to their focus on 'justice issues'
i.e. Fr. Eddie has great insights and is worth the time to listen to.
Since Lectionary Year C uses texts from Luke's gospel which focuses heavily
on justice issues, especially economic justice, I believe that this seminar
"Preaching a Just Word" is timely.

An Interfaith Seminar on Justice and Preaching
Your preaching is the moment when you can illuminate how the word connects
to people's lives.
How does your preaching present justice perspectives? What gives you the
courage to preach justice? What are the sources of your own resistance? How
might you handle the resistance in your congregation?
Drawing upon case studies, contemporary film and preachers' own stories, you
will leave this seminar with strategies to work with boards, congregations
and judicatories. You will meet colleagues who seek to "do justice" in their
congregations.
About the Leaders:
This seminar is led by Rev. Eduardo Samaniego, S.J., Most Holy Trinity
Catholic Church and Rabbi Dana Magat, Temple Emmanuel,San Jose.
Fr. Eddie is the author of If You Preach It, They Will Come and has given
preaching classes to seminarians, and preaching workshops to Diocesan clergy
and to Food for the Poor throughout the United States.
Rabbi Magat has been the spiritual leader of San Jose's oldest Reform
congregation for more than ten years, and is known for his warmth and
connection with people of all ages. He is committed to interfaith
relationships and the importance of building a strong interfaith community
in San Jose.
